MITRA Samaj, in partnership with Vision Three Sixty International, has officially launched a project under the Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative (CSESI) to develop and disseminate a package of supplementary Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials aimed at strengthening climate-resilient education in Nepal.

The initiative, funded by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and implemented by Save the Children, UNESCO, and UNESCO’s International Institute for Education Planning (IIEP), seeks to integrate climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability into education sector planning, policies, and strategies. In Nepal, CSESI provides technical support to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) and the Centre for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD) to develop evidence-based policies, utilize climate data for educational planning, and foster cross-sectoral coordination for climate- and disaster-resilient education.

Education

The newly launched project focuses on scoping, preparation, and testing of IEC materials to support educational continuity in schools affected by climate-related emergencies such as floods, heatwaves, and other natural disasters. These materials include videos on climate-resilient schools, inclusive resources for children with disabilities, short climate risk analysis tools, and Social Behaviour Change (SBC) campaigns designed to foster child-led climate action in schools.

“Climate-induced school closures are a major contributor to learning loss, and these IEC materials will be instrumental in ensuring education continuity across Nepal.”

MITRA Samaj’s efforts will involve mapping and reviewing existing school safety and educational continuity materials, documenting good practices such as home-schooling and the Tole Shikchhya approach, and identifying gaps that can guide future development. The project emphasizes gender and social inclusion while aligning with the Comprehensive School Safety Master Plan (CSSMP) to support local governments, schools, and community-based structures in implementing climate-resilient education strategies.

With this launch, MITRA Samaj and its partners aim to strengthen the education sector’s capacity to ensure safe, inclusive, and resilient learning environments, equipping students, educators, and communities to better adapt to climate-related challenges.
