With capacity building support to civil society organisations, MITRA Samaj pledges to foster a more legitimate, accountable, and resilient Nepali civil society that is capable of advancing the public interest.
On January 23, 2017, MITRA Samaj signed an agreement with FHI360 to implement ‘Enhancing CSO and Media Capacity for Constructive Government Engagement and Public Oversight’, a sub-project under its parent USAID-funded CS:MAP (Civil Society: Mutual Accountability Project), the goal of which is to foster a more legitimate, accountable, and resilient Nepali civil society that is capable of advancing the public interest.
Under the project, MITRA Samaj will implement various capacity building activities to strengthen organisational capacity and sustainability of 14 civil society organisations (CSOs) working in USAID priority sectors in 34 districts to advance local solutions and establish more coordination between civil society and media for oversight of public resource use and public service delivery. MITRA Samaj further intervenes to support CSOs and media to develop their capacity in effectively undertaking policy advocacy and government engagement.
As entry-level activity, MITRA Samaj will implement OCA (Organisation Capacity Assessment) of CSOs and will identify their institutional strength and areas of improvement. Following this, MITRA Samaj will conduct different trainings, workshops, orientation programs and coaching and mentoring sessions to build the capacity of CSOs. Similarly, MITRA Samaj will conduct Advocacy Readiness Index (ARI) – first of its kind in Nepal – to identify strength and areas of improvement of CSOs in conducting advocacy. As support in building the capacity of CSOs, MITRA Samaj will conduct trainings, workshops, orientation programs and coaching and mentoring to capacitate CSOs in understanding of advocacy and support them in developing and implementing advocacy plans in their respective advocacy issues.
Besides assessments and supporting in implementing action plans, MITRA Samaj conducts various training on social accountability mechanisms, advocacy, good governance, public service oversight, and participatory evidence-based action research and support the CSOs in implementing the same.
