MITRA Samaj conducts orientation and frequent coaching and mentoring sessions to capacitate board members and staffs of CS:MAP local partners on planning and conducting advocacy on their priority issues.
MITRA Samaj, in September and October, conducted series of ‘Orientation on Advocacy Skills’ sessions in five civil society organisations working under USAID-funded Civil Society: Mutual Accountability Project.
The objectives of the orientation were to establish common understanding on the conceptual framework of advocacy among board members and staffs of all individual CSOs; share contextual experiences of advocacy from different parts of the countries; analyse different tools and techniques practised by different organisations for advocacy; contribute to establishing a common human resource pool in advocacy; and develop future strategies to implement the capacity building programme for community-based organisations in advocacy.
Capacity Development Specialists of MITRA Samaj Karna Bahadur Nepali and Dabal Kaji Rokaha focused on introduction to advocacy, advocacy strategies, purpose of advocacy, features of good governance, relation between good governance and advocacy, logical steps for advocacy planning, power relations, advocacy tree analysis, networking, media mobilization, advocacy tools, advocacy techniques, flow-view of advocacy initiatives, and legitimacy and credibility in advocacy.
Following the orientation sessions, capacity building specialists conducted series of coaching and mentoring sessions and facilitated all CSOs to identify advocacy issues of their respective organisations and supported them in developing action plans for respective advocacy issues. They supported all CSOs to identify at least two institutional advocacy issues and district-based advocacy issues for 12 CS:MAP districts.
CSOs to whom MITRA Samaj had oriented on advocacy were Human Rights Awareness & development Centre (HURADEC, Dolakha), Development Exchange Centre (DEC-Nepal, Chitwan), Society for Humanism Nepal (SOCH Nepal, Kathmandu), Indreni Rural Development Centre (IRDC, Kapilvastu), and Integrated Rural Development Society, Gulmi).
